Cottage on Georgian Bay
On a granite outcropping dotted by windswept white pines – a landscape so characteristic of Georgian Bay – sits a family cottage. The spectacular site begs for an architecture that doesn’t overwhelm; the solution is a refined interpretation of local traditions of cottage building.
The interior nods to these traditions as well, while remaining staunchly contemporary in resolution. With a restrained palette of stone and wood the cottage foregrounds the beauty of the natural landscape while providing a comfortable space for the family to relax, host, and entertain at this isolated rock at the edge of the Canadian Shield.
Photographed in summer 2023, during the Ontario and Quebec wildfires, which gave the light a hazy, almost tactile quality.
