Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA & Library

At the intersection of Jane and Highway 7, a new community of condo towers is emerging from the surrounding suburban neighbourhood. At the heart of this burgeoning density lies a new transit hub, and a three storey complex at the base of an office tower, containing community spaces and a library, operated by the City, and aquatics and fitness facilities, operated by the YMCA.

The project exemplifies a novel typology of community spaces and fitness facilities that occupy the bottom floors of larger development projects – vertically stacked, this arrangement necessitates new ways of organizing space and circulation, and also provides opportunities for transparency and views between various types of programmed spaces.

The project was photographed on several occasions throughout 2022 and 2023 in order to capture activity within the diverse range of interior spaces.
