East Lions Community Centre
Anchoring the East Lions Park with new athletics and community facilities, this project also reimagines the Park itself with new trails around an existing pond, basketball courts, and updated playground tennis facilities.
A new courtyard carved from the west facade becomes the point of connection between indoor and outdoor recreation activities, and is cloaked in a thin veil of perforated metal mesh, providing shading while permitting views through to the lobby and interior spaces beyond.
The aluminum cladding reflects light differently depending on the weather, time of day, and season – sometimes presenting as stately and serious, and at other times coming to life with reflected light and colour.
I photographed the building twice, in winter 2021 and summer 2022.
