Lawrence Orton Daycare

At the base of an apartment tower in Scarborough, this project is one of three pilot projects in Toronto Community Housing’s ReSet program which focuses on building renewal and socioeconomic action plans with residents.

The addition of a 54-spot childcare facility serves an important need in the community and comprises five childcare rooms for infants to 5-year-olds, and associated outdoor play spaces.

The building was photographed on two occasions over 2022 and 2023 and was a 2024 OAA Design Excellence Award finalist.

“This surgical intervention into the base of an apartment building illustrates how a strategic re-imagining of a blank façade, framing a courtyard and strengthening the relationships with other adjacent buildings resulted in an architectural design that is sensitive to the needs of the community..”
