Tom Patterson Theatre

The glistening new Tom Patterson Theatre overlooks the Avon River, a jewel for the city of Stratford, and new venue for the acclaimed Stratford Festival.

Photographed prior to its public opening in fall 2021, the building is centred around a brick-clad theatre which is wrapped in a sinuous, shimmering bronze veil that undulates in and out of the surrounding gardens. Each curve of the veil creates indoor and outdoor spaces that houses programming for pre and post-show activities.

A second assignment to shoot the building was completed in summer 2022, on opening night of the Festival’s production of All’s Well That Ends Well, with a focus on capturing the activity of patrons.

The building has been widely published, including on the cover of Canadian Architect, in Azure, and The Plan Magazine, among others.

The building was recognized with a 2022 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture.

“Clad in brick, its central drum-shaped auditorium is framed by limestone pillars and an undulating series of light-filled rooms that stretch across the manicured landscape like the folds and eddies of the adjacent Avon River...

Inside, the facade’s folds and eddies translate into a procession of flexible social spaces that flow out from either side of the luxurious lobby to face the river.”
